Mixed-metal hoops

Brass was everywhere at this year’s London Design Festival, from lighting to mirrors, tableware to taps, but it’s less visible in contemporary jewellery, where its use is often covered up with silver- or gold-plate, as though it’s something to be hidden away. Why? Obviously, precious metals carry a higher price and prestige value, but brass – an alloy of copper and zinc that has been used since Roman times – brings a lot to the table. It may lack the upfront blingtastic twinkle of gold, but its muted golden hues have a subtle charm that appeals to those who have always worn silver but want to explore other materials. It’s also very flattering. I like contrasting precious and non-precious metals, blurring the boundaries between costume and fine jewellery.
